God's Upholding Hand: Safety for the Pilgrim
The psalmist cries, 'Uphold me!' recognizing a fundamental truth: the believer's life is a pilgrimage through treacherous terrain requiring God's constant support. Spurgeon identifies five reasons why this upholding prayer is essential.
First, the way itself is slippery—the path of righteousness offers no natural footing. Second, our own feet compound the danger; we stumble through weakness and folly. Third, cunning foes actively seek to trip us, as Satan and his agents work against our progress. Fourth, sometimes the peril comes not from descent but from elevation—when God raises us to heights of spiritual blessing, we face the vertigo of unaccustomed station. Fifth, this prayer becomes doubly urgent because most people abandon uprightness altogether, making the faithful few conspicuous targets.
Yet two blessed consequences flow from God's upholding hand. We become safe—not only for our own souls, but as living examples and pillars supporting the church's structure. Our stability strengthens others. Second, we become watchful and sensitive, developing what the psalmist calls perpetual respect unto God's statutes. This vigilance is not paranoia but spiritual attentiveness—the person who walks securely in God's grip monitors his own steps with reverent care.
Without this divine upholding and consequent watchfulness, Spurgeon warns, no one remains truly safe. The pilgrim requires both Yahweh's hand beneath and his eyes continually fixed upon the Father's Word.
