Setting Your Heart Upon God's Defenses
The Psalmist commands us to "mark ye well her bulwarks"—yet the Hebrew reveals something far richer than casual observation. The margin reads, "Set your heart to her bulwarks." This is no passing glance or negligent inspection; it demands wholehearted attention and deliberate investigation.
The word khail (חיל) means primarily a host or army, then extends to fortification—specifically the ditch, trench, and low breastwork that encircles and protects a city. When we set our hearts upon God's defenses, we are contemplating the very ramparts He has constructed for our protection.
Spurgeon understood this image profoundly: we must give ourselves entirely to understanding the fortress of divine protection. Not with divided attention, not half-heartedly, but with the earnestness of one who recognizes that these bulwarks are our refuge. The ditch represents the depth of God's counsel; the walls embody His strength; the breastwork shields us from assault.
To "set your heart" upon them means to meditate, to study, to embrace them as precious truth. A soldier who ignores his fortifications perishes; a believer who neglects God's promises of protection falters. The Almighty has surrounded His people with defensive works—covenant mercies, divine wisdom, sovereign care. Our calling is to fix our attention upon these bulwarks with undivided devotion, recognizing them as the very infrastructure of our security.
