John of the Cross — Ascent Prayer

To arrive at being all, desire to be nothing. To arrive at knowing all, desire to know nothing. To arrive at possessing all, desire to possess nothing. To arrive at being everything, desire to be nothing. When thou thinkest upon anything, thou ceasest to cast thyself upon the All. For to come to the All thou must give up the all. And when thou comest to have the All, thou must have it desiring nothing.
