Lead Me in Thy Truth: Guidance and Daily Waiting
"Lead me in Thy truth, and teach me" (Psalm 25:5)—a short but expressive prayer that every believer urgently needs. We require this petition when surrounded by gloom, when tempted, and when our path grows rough.
First, consider the petition for guidance. We need it because we are ignorant of the future, the way is dark, and we dare not walk alone in our weakness. The Psalmist asks that Elohim will lead him according to His own revealed will—"in Thy truth."
Second, the petition for instruction. How little we truly know after all these years. We do not comprehend our bodies, much less our souls. We know not the preciousness of time, nor the reality of eternity. We scarcely understand life or the hearts of men. Therefore we must pray: "Lord, teach me" (William Scott).
Third, waiting upon Yahweh all the day long. This is the waiting of patient expectation and constant attendance. To wait upon God means to live a life of desire toward Him—not merely toward His gifts, but toward God Himself. It is to live in delight in God, in dependence upon Him as a child upon a father, and in devotedness to Him as a servant to a master. This waiting must occur every day and all day through: by casting our daily care upon Him, managing our daily business for Him, receiving our daily comforts from Him, and resisting our daily temptations in the strength of His grace.
