The Pillar-Cloud: Christ's Dual Guidance by Word and Spirit
Isaiah 4:5 recalls the pillar-cloud of Israel—that vast column of mingled fire and smoke which led Yahweh's people through the wilderness. When stationary, they rested; when it advanced, they journeyed. This was no mere natural phenomenon but a semeion (sign) of the present Deity, a miraculous provision accompanying Israel's every step.
The pillar-cloud was typological of Jesus Christ, who ever liveth as the Church's Prophet, Priest, and King. If the shadow prefigured good things to come, Christ Himself is the glorious substance.
The Redeemer leads His Church by two inseparable means:
First, by His Word. Not more certainly was there one pillar-cloud than there is one Bible. Scripture stands alone in authority—the sole director of faith, the sole regulator of our walk, the standard in all worship. When human opinions oppose its demands, "we must obey God rather than men."
Second, by His Spirit. Christ promised His disciples: "The Comforter, who is the Holy Ghost...shall teach you all things." The Word is a lamp to our feet, yet our hands grow feeble; darkness shrouds our minds. How desirable then to have a living guide—the Pneuma Hagion (Holy Spirit)—to expound the infallible directory! The fiery pillar could point the direction; Christ's Spirit gives sight to the blind, illuminating what the letter alone cannot penetrate.
