Lessons from Climate Change & Stewardship
In the face of the climate crisis, we find ourselves confronting a moral challenge that echoes the parable of the talents. We have been entrusted with a beautiful, yet fragile gift — our planet. Just like the servants who were given resources to manage, we too will one day give account for how we steward this earth that God has lovingly created.
Let me share with you the inspiring story of David, a devoted youth leader in our church. One Sunday, he woke up with a conviction that reverberated deep within him: it was time to act. He organized a “Green Sunday,” inviting not just the youth but the whole congregation to commit to environmental stewardship. Under his passionate leadership, they transformed their church into a beacon of hope. Solar panels gleamed brightly atop the roof, catching the sun’s rays as if to say, “We are harnessing God's creation for His glory.”
But it didn’t stop there. David spearheaded a community garden, filled with tomatoes, peppers, and herbs — a vibrant testament to God's provision. The church organized a “carpool challenge,” where families began to share rides, filling the air not just with laughter but also with a sense of community and shared purpose. What began as an environmental initiative blossomed into a powerful witness in their neighborhood about what it means to care for creation.
This movement was not simply about political agendas; it became a profound spiritual awakening. As we were reminded in 1 Thessalonians 5:11, “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up.” David and his congregation became stewards not just of the earth, but of each other, cultivating a community that reflects the heart of God’s love and care for all creation. It sparks a question for us: How are we nurturing the world God has entrusted to us? Let us lean into that calling with joy and awe, for together we can create a future filled with hope.
