Lessons from Compassion - Story
On a chilly winter evening, I found myself in a small café, seeking a warm drink and a moment of solitude. As I settled into my corner seat, I noticed a mother and her young daughter at the table beside me. The little girl, perhaps six or seven, clutched a half-eaten muffin, her eyes wide with wonder as she watched her mother write in a journal. It was clear that this was not just any ordinary evening; the mother was pouring out her heart onto the pages, her brow furrowed in deep thought.
Suddenly, the little girl leaned over and asked, “Mommy, what are you writing?” Her innocent curiosity cut through the air like a gentle breeze. The mother paused, a flicker of warmth lighting up her face. “I’m writing about all the things I’m grateful for,” she replied. “Every day, I list my blessings to remind myself of the good in the world.”
Inspired, the girl reached for a napkin and began to scrawl her own list: “Mommy, love, cookies, and… Jesus.” Seeing her daughter express such joy from simple things was a moment of pure compassion that reminded me of the fruits of the Spirit Paul writes about in Galatians 5:22-23. It dawned on me that faith isn’t just about grand gestures; it’s about the little things, the everyday acts of love and kindness that guide us.
In that moment, I realized that compassion fuels our spiritual growth and purpose. Just as Mary embraced her call, we too are invited to embody that same tenderness and faithfulness in our own lives, learning from our children, who remind us that true faith shines brightly in the simplest of acts.
