Moana: I Am Moana (Exodus 3:14)
Imagine the sun setting over the vast, turquoise waters of Motunui, the sky painted in hues of orange and pink, as Moana stands on the shore, her heart racing. She has embarked on a journey across the ocean, not just through waves but through the very depths of her identity. As she gazes into the distance, she knows a confrontation awaits—Te Ka, a fierce and monstrous embodiment of rage and pain. But Moana doesn’t raise her fists; instead, she lifts her voice, singing, “I have crossed the horizon to find you. I know your name.”
In that moment, she doesn’t just see a monster; she sees the wounded heart of Te Fiti, the island goddess corrupted by loss and grief. With each note she sings, the very essence of her heritage flows through her—Moana of Motunui, daughter of the chief, descended from legendary voyagers who navigated the stars. Her identity is a beacon of hope, illuminating the darkness that surrounds Te Ka.
Names hold profound power; they shape our destinies. God revealed His name to Moses, proclaiming, “I AM WHO I AM.” This divine revelation is not just a name; it is an invitation to understand our true selves. When Moana recognizes who she is, she is empowered to restore Te Ka's true identity. In our lives, when we forget who we are—beloved children of God—we can easily become like Te Ka, raging against the world, wounded and lost.
But just as Moana's song brings healing, so too can our acknowledgment of names and identities bring restoration. Naming what is broken allows us to reclaim our stories, turning monsters back into the beloved creations they were meant to be. In that vulnerability lies courage, and in that courage lies the path to healing—for ourselves and for the world around us.
