More Than What You Can Finish

In the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, British sprinter Derek Redmond lined up for the 400-meter semifinal as one of the favorites. He had trained his entire life for this moment. Halfway around the track, his hamstring snapped. He crumpled to the ground while the other runners surged past him toward the finish line.

What happened next became one of the most replayed moments in Olympic history. Redmond pulled himself up and began hopping toward the finish line, weeping in pain. Then a large man in a T-shirt pushed past security and ran onto the track. It was Jim Redmond — Derek's father. He wrapped his arm around his son and said, "We're going to finish this together." The two of them crossed the line arm in arm while 65,000 people rose to their feet.

In that moment, Derek Redmond's identity shifted. He was no longer defined by his speed, his torn muscle, or his shattered dream. He was defined by whose son he was.

So many of us build our identity on what we can perform — our career, our productivity, our reputation. And when something tears, we collapse on the track believing the race is over. But the Father leaves His seat for us. He pushes past every barrier and says, "You are Mine, and we finish this together."
