More Than What You're Made Of

In 2005, stem cell biologist Jonas Frisen at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm made a remarkable discovery. By measuring carbon-14 levels in human tissue, he demonstrated that your body systematically replaces nearly all of its cells over the course of seven to ten years. Your stomach lining renews every few days. Your skin replaces itself every two to three weeks. Even your skeleton is rebuilt roughly every decade.

Think about that. The body you are sitting in right now shares almost none of the same physical material as the body you had ten years ago. The molecules are different. The cells are different. And yet you are still you.

Science can explain the replacement. What it cannot fully explain is the continuity — the persistent you that remains through every renovation.

Scripture speaks directly to this mystery. The psalmist writes, "For You created my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother's womb" (Psalm 139:13). Your identity was never located in your cells. It was spoken into existence by the One who formed you — El Roi, the God Who Sees.

The world will try to define you by your body, your job title, your failures, your diagnosis. But if even your biology replaces itself and you still persist, then who you are must be anchored in something deeper than flesh.

You are not what you are made of. You are who you were made by.
