No Junk in Your DNA
For decades, geneticists had a term for roughly 98 percent of human DNA: "junk." These vast stretches of non-coding sequences seemed to serve no purpose — evolutionary leftovers, biological noise, genetic filler taking up space.
Then in 2012, the ENCODE Project — an international collaboration involving over 400 scientists, led by Ewan Birney — published findings that stunned the scientific community. Much of what had been dismissed as junk actually performed critical regulatory functions. These sequences acted as switches, turning genes on and off, orchestrating the intricate symphony of human development. What scientists had called worthless turned out to be essential.
Some of you walked in here this morning carrying a label someone gave you. Worthless. Too much. Not enough. Junk. Maybe a parent said it. Maybe a boss confirmed it. Maybe you've whispered it to yourself so many times you've started to believe it.
But the God who knit you together in your mother's womb does not produce junk. Psalm 139 tells us we are "fearfully and wonderfully made" — and the Hebrew word for "wonderfully" carries the sense of being set apart, distinct, remarkable. Every part of you — including the parts others have dismissed — serves a purpose in the hands of the Almighty.
Science spent fifty years calling essential DNA "junk" because they didn't yet understand its function. Don't let anyone — including yourself — do the same to you.
