Scripture's Wonder: A Threefold Reason for Obedience
Why should we obey God's Word? Spurgeon identifies three compelling reasons woven into Scripture's wonderful character. First, the Word is pure — morally spotless and free from corruption. Its precepts elevate our souls toward holiness rather than drag them toward degradation. Second, the Word is perfectly balanced—just in its demands, proportionate in its rewards, equitable in its justice. Despots issue arbitrary commands; Yahweh issues instruction that harmonizes human flourishing with divine purpose. Third, the Word serves a triple benediction: it benefits our own souls, advances the good of society, and ultimately glorifies the divine name. Consider a father's instruction to his child: the command to avoid fire seems arbitrary until the child understands it protects both body and soul, preserves family harmony, and honors the father's wisdom. So it is with God's precepts. Obedience to Scripture is not servile submission to a tyrant's caprice, but willing alignment with a loving Sovereign whose every statute aims at our eternal welfare, social blessing, and His own righteous exaltation. The Psalmist recognizes that God's commandments are wondrous—literally pelā'îm, full of hidden splendor and inexhaustible depth. When we comprehend this threefold excellence, obedience transforms from grim duty into joyful privilege.
