Silver Candlesticks and Second Chances

In the 2012 film Les Misérables, there is a scene that stops you cold. Jean Valjean, freshly released from nineteen years in prison, is taken in by the Bishop of Digne — given a warm meal and a bed for the night. But old habits die hard. Valjean steals the bishop's silver and slips away in the darkness.

When the police drag him back the next morning, the stolen silver spilling from his bag, Valjean braces for the punishment he knows he deserves. But the bishop does something no one expects. He looks at Valjean and says he gave him the silver. Then he picks up two silver candlesticks and presses them into the stunned man's hands, telling him he forgot the best pieces.

That moment breaks something open in Valjean. Not the punishment he earned, but the grace he never imagined — that is what restores him. The bishop did not see a convict. He saw a man worth redeeming.

This is exactly what the Almighty does with every one of us. We come dragging the evidence of our failures, expecting judgment, and God responds with extravagant, bewildering grace. He does not simply forgive the debt. He presses something precious into our hands and says, "Now go — become who I always intended you to be."

Restoration never begins with what we deserve. It begins with what God gives. And what He gives always exceeds what we took.
