The Arms That Knew Him

At the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, British sprinter Derek Redmond lined up for the 400-meter semi-final carrying years of sacrifice and a singular dream. Then, roughly 250 meters in, his hamstring tore.

Derek crumpled on the track, clutching his leg. Medical staff rushed toward him with a stretcher, but he waved them off. Teeth clenched, tears streaming, he began hopping toward the finish line on one leg.

Then something happened that sixty-five thousand people would never forget. A large man in a T-shirt pushed past security and ran onto the track. It was Jim Redmond, Derek's father. He wrapped his arm around his son's shoulder and whispered, "We're going to finish this together." And they did. Step by agonizing step, father and son crossed the line while the entire stadium rose to its feet.

Derek didn't win a medal that day. He was officially disqualified. But he discovered something more important than gold. In the worst moment of his career, he was reminded whose he was. Not a runner. Not a competitor. A son.

We live in a world that defines us by performance, by what we produce and achieve. But the Almighty doesn't love you because you finish first. He loves you because you're His. "See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are" (1 John 3:1).

Your identity was never in the race. It was always in the arms of the Father.
