The Cells She Still Carries

In 1996, researcher Diana Bianchi at Tufts University made a remarkable discovery. During pregnancy, fetal cells cross the placenta and embed themselves in the mother's body — in her lungs, her liver, her skin, and even her heart. These cells don't disappear after delivery. They remain for decades. Bianchi's team found fetal cells in mothers twenty-seven years after giving birth.

But here is what stunned the medical community: these cells are not passive hitchhikers. When a mother's heart is injured, fetal cells migrate to the damaged tissue and differentiate into cardiac cells, actively participating in repair. A child she carried for nine months is still healing her heart a quarter century later.

This is what love does. It does not visit and leave. It moves in. It becomes part of the tissue and fiber of who you are. The prophet Ezekiel said the Lord promises to remove our heart of stone and give us a heart of flesh. Divine love does not merely touch us. It restructures us at the deepest level, repairing what is broken, becoming inseparable from who we are.
