The Chosen: Jesus Training the Disciples - Christocentric (Proverbs 22:6)
Picture a sun-drenched afternoon in a neighborhood park, where the laughter of children fills the air like music. A father stands at the edge of the playground, watching his daughter, Kayla, as she teeters on the brink of the jungle gym, unsure but determined. His heart swells with pride and hope. He remembers the countless hours he spent teaching her how to ride a bicycle, how to tie her shoes, and, yes, how to navigate the complexities of this world.
Just as he encouraged her to take her first wobbly steps on two wheels, our Lord Jesus did with His disciples. He gathered twelve ordinary men—Peter, James, John—each with their doubts and struggles. Theologian Frederick Buechner once said, "Discipleship is not about being perfect; it is about being willing." And oh, how the disciples stumbled! They faltered in their faith, argued about greatness, and even denied Him. Yet despite their shortcomings, they remained steadfast, for they were trained in love and grace.
When Proverbs 22:6 tells us to "train up a child in the way he should go," it echoes the very heart of Jesus’ mission. He demonstrated not just with words but through His life: self-denial, service, and unwavering commitment to the Father’s will. He walked alongside them, showing them the path of agape—unconditional love.
So as we reflect on our own roles—whether as parents, mentors, or spiritual guides—let us remember to invite our children into relationship, to teach them through our own lives, to point them to Jesus. For when our young ones stumble, as they inevitably will, let them find in us a steadfast presence guiding them back to the path of Christ. His way is the way they should go, and together, we can help them change the world, just as those twelve did.
