The Comeback Kid from Kansas City

In January 2023, the Buffalo Bills led the Kansas City Chiefs 24-20 in the divisional playoff round. Patrick Mahomes had suffered a high ankle sprain earlier in the game, limping visibly on the sideline. Most viewers assumed his night was over. But Mahomes returned to the field, hobbling between plays, barely able to plant his foot — and led the Chiefs to a 27-24 victory. He went on to win the Super Bowl three weeks later.

What struck me was not just the win. It was the limp. Mahomes did not return to that field fully healed. He returned wounded, limited, visibly broken — and still effective. He could not scramble the way he normally would. He had to find a different way to lead.

This is often how the Lord restores us. We imagine restoration means going back to the way things were before the injury — before the divorce, before the diagnosis, before the betrayal. But God's restoration rarely looks like a rewind. It looks like a limp that still carries you forward.

Jacob wrestled with God at Peniel and walked away with a new name and a permanent limp. The Almighty did not remove the wound. He redeemed it.

You may be limping today. You may feel like the version of yourself that could run freely is gone forever. But the God who restored Jacob, who restored Peter after his denial, is not waiting for you to be whole before He uses you. He meets you in the limp — and calls it enough.
