On February 2, 1949, a Greyhound bus slammed head-on into Ben Hogan's car on a foggy Texas highway. Doctors said the golfer would never walk again. His pelvis was fractured. His collarbone, ankle, and ribs were shattered. Blood clots threatened his life. For weeks, he lay in a hospital bed while sportswriters wrote his career's obituary.

Sixteen months later, Ben Hogan walked onto the fairway at Merion Golf Club for the 1950 U.S. Open. His legs were wrapped in bandages. Every step sent pain through his body. He played 36 holes on the final day — a grueling test that would exhaust a healthy man. On the 72nd hole, he struck a famous 1-iron approach shot that landed on the green, forcing a playoff he would win the next day.

Hogan didn't just return to golf. He went on to win five more major championships after that crash.
