The Contract That Cannot Be Amended
In 1647, the Westminster divines labored for years over every clause of their Confession, weighing each word against the infallible standard of Scripture. No phrase was negotiable. No doctrine was softened to suit the cultural moment. They understood that God's Word admits no revision, and neither does His call upon a life.
Luke 9:23 records Christ's words with unmistakable clarity: "If anyone would come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me." Notice the precision of the text. Jesus does not say "consider denying yourself" or "occasionally bear inconvenience." The Greek imperative is decisive and continuous — deny, take up, follow. Three commands, no qualifications, no escape clauses.
As Wayne Grudem has observed, Scripture's inerrancy means we cannot dismiss difficult passages as culturally conditioned. When Christ defines the terms of discipleship, He speaks with the full authority of the living God. Every word is breathed out by the Holy Spirit and stands as binding truth.
A seminary professor once told his students, "You do not negotiate with a king's decree. You obey it or you rebel." The same holds for discipleship. Christ does not invite us into a partnership of equals. He issues a sovereign summons — deny yourself, embrace suffering, follow without reservation.
