The David Already Inside the Stone

When asked how he created his masterpiece David, Michelangelo reportedly said, "I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free." For three years, from 1501 to 1504, he worked on a block of Carrara marble that two other sculptors had already abandoned as flawed. They saw damaged stone. Michelangelo saw a shepherd king waiting to emerge.

He didn't add David to the marble. He removed everything that wasn't David.

This is how God works with our identity. So many of us walk through life encased in layers that don't belong to us — the shame someone spoke over us in childhood, the roles we perform to earn approval, the failures we've let define us. We look in the mirror and see damaged stone. But God, the Master Sculptor, sees who He created us to be before the world chipped away at us — and before we piled on everything that was never ours to carry.

The chisel doesn't always feel gentle. Sanctification rarely does. When God strips away a false identity we've clung to for years, it can feel like losing ourselves. But He isn't destroying us. He is freeing us.

Ephesians 2:10 tells us we are God's workmanship — His poiema, His masterpiece. Your truest identity isn't something you build. It's something God reveals as He lovingly removes everything that was never really you.
