The Example of Compassion - Quote
A few years ago, I visited a nursing home to deliver a message of hope to those who often felt forgotten. As I walked through the halls, I met a woman named Margaret. Her eyes sparkled with a hint of mischief amid the frailty of her frame. When I introduced myself, she warmly grasped my hand, her grip still strong despite her years.
As we talked, she shared a story from her childhood during the Great Depression. She remembered how her family would gather, not just around the dinner table, but around the warmth of shared stories and laughter—even when there was little to eat. They cared for one another, neighbors helping neighbors, a tapestry of compassion woven into their very lives.
Margaret paused and looked deeply into my eyes. “You see, dear,” she said, “compassion doesn’t just happen; it’s cultivated. Like a shepherd leading his flock, we must guide one another gently—just as Psalm 23 reminds us, ‘The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.’ He leads us to green pastures, but sometimes those pastures are found in each other.”
In that moment, I was reminded that we are called to be the hands and feet of Christ, nourishing one another with kindness, truth, and unwavering support. Margaret, with her tender spirit, illustrated what it means to live in community, to embody the compassion of Christ. She was a living reminder that even in our most difficult seasons, we can be conduits of grace and hope, fostering spiritual growth as we connect deeply with one another.
