The Father Who Crossed Every Line

In the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, British sprinter Derek Redmond lined up for the 400-meter semifinal. He had trained for years, overcome multiple surgeries, and finally reached the moment he had dreamed about since childhood. When the gun fired, Derek surged forward — until his hamstring snapped halfway through the race.

He crumpled to the track, clutching his leg. Medical staff rushed toward him with a stretcher, but Derek refused. He pulled himself up and began hobbling toward the finish line, tears streaming down his face.

Then something happened that 65,000 spectators would never forget. A large man in a baseball cap pushed past security, burst through the officials, and wrapped his arm around Derek's waist. It was Jim Redmond — his father.

"You don't have to do this," Jim told his son.

"Yes, I do," Derek said.

"Then we're going to finish this together," Jim replied.

And they did. Father and son crossed that finish line arm in arm while the entire stadium rose to its feet.

That is the love of God. The Almighty does not watch from the stands while His children struggle. He crosses every line — every barrier of heaven and earth — to reach us in our broken moments. As Romans 5:8 reminds us, "while we were still sinners, Christ died for us."
