The Figure Already in the Stone

When Michelangelo stood before a raw block of Carrara marble, he did not see emptiness. He saw a person waiting to emerge. He once described his work not as creating a sculpture but as liberating the figure already trapped inside the stone. "Every block of stone has a statue inside it," he said, "and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it." His chisel did not impose something foreign onto the marble — it revealed what was already there.

This is how God sees you.

So many of us walk through life believing we are nothing more than rough, unfinished stone. We define ourselves by our failures, our addictions, our worst Thursday afternoon. We look in the mirror and see raw material at best, damaged goods at worst. But God, the Master Sculptor, has never seen you that way. Before you were formed in the womb, He knew you. He has always seen the finished work — the beloved child, the redeemed saint, the image-bearer of the Most High — waiting inside.

The chisel strokes of life are not punishment. They are not random. Every loss that shapes you, every struggle that refines you, every season of stripping away is the careful hand of a Father who knows exactly who you are beneath the excess stone.

Your identity was never yours to manufacture. It was always His to reveal. You are not becoming someone new. You are becoming who you have always been in the eyes of God.
