The Gift That Connected the World

In 1989, a British computer scientist named Tim Berners-Lee sat in his office at CERN and invented the World Wide Web. He created a system that would become the most transformative technology in human history — connecting billions of people, reshaping economies, and rewriting how we live. Any patent attorney would have told him the same thing: this is worth billions. Lock it down. Charge for it.

Berners-Lee refused. He released it freely to the world, insisting the Web remain open and available to everyone. He later said he could not have lived with himself if he had kept it locked behind a paywall while people who needed connection went without it.

That decision mirrors something far older and infinitely more costly. The Apostle John tells us that God so loved the world that He gave — not sold, not licensed, not offered on a subscription plan — but gave His only Son. The Creator of the universe held the most precious thing in existence and released it freely, for everyone, because love does not hoard what others desperately need.

Berners-Lee gave away a protocol that connects computers. God gave away a Son who connects souls to their Maker. One changed how we communicate. The other changed our eternal address.

Love, real love, always moves toward generosity. It opens its hands rather than closing them. What is God asking you to release today — not because it costs you nothing, but precisely because it costs you everything?
