The Gift the Thief Didn't Deserve

In the film Les Misérables, Jean Valjean stumbles out of nineteen years in prison — bitter, starving, turned away by every inn in town. Only the Bishop of Digne opens his door, offering a warm meal and a clean bed. Valjean repays this kindness by stealing the Bishop's silver in the dead of night.

When the police drag Valjean back the next morning, the Bishop does something no one expects. Instead of confirming the theft, he tells the officers he gave the silver as a gift. Then he reaches for two silver candlesticks — his most prized possessions — and presses them into Valjean's hands. "You left so early," he says gently. "You forgot I gave these to you as well."

That single act of undeserved love transforms Valjean's entire life. He becomes a man of compassion, a protector of the vulnerable, a father to the fatherless — all because one person answered betrayal not with punishment, but with more generosity.

This is the love Paul describes in Romans 5:8 — "While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." God did not wait for us to clean up, apologize, or earn our way back. He met our betrayal with His own candlesticks — the cross. And that kind of love, the kind that gives more when it has every right to give nothing, is the love that changes everything.
