The Heartbeat Next to Yours

In 1978, at a hospital in Bogotá, Colombia, Dr. Edgar Rey Sanabria faced a crisis. His neonatal unit lacked enough incubators for the premature babies in his care. So he tried something radical — he placed the tiny infants directly against their mothers' bare chests and held them there.

What happened stunned the medical world. Babies who should have died began to thrive. Their heart rates stabilized. Their breathing steadied. Their body temperatures, which no mechanical warmer could perfectly regulate, synchronized with their mothers' skin. The practice became known as kangaroo care, and decades of research have since confirmed what Dr. Rey discovered by necessity: a parent's physical closeness does what the most sophisticated technology cannot. The mother's body actually adjusts its own temperature to warm or cool the child against her chest.

This is how the love of God works in a human life. We spend so much effort building our own incubators — our strategies for self-protection, our carefully controlled environments — and still we shiver. Still our hearts race with anxiety. But when we allow ourselves to be drawn close to the Father, something shifts at a level deeper than willpower. His presence regulates what we cannot regulate ourselves.

"He carries them close to His heart," Isaiah 40:11 tells us. Not in His pocket. Not at arm's length. Against His chest, where every beat says, "You are Mine, and you will live."
