The Heartbeat on Your Chest

In 1978, Dr. Edgar Rey Sanabria faced a crisis in Bogotá, Colombia. His neonatal unit was overwhelmed — too many premature babies, not enough incubators. So he tried something radical. He placed the tiny infants directly on their mothers' bare chests, skin against skin, heartbeat against heartbeat.

What happened stunned the medical world. Babies who had been struggling to survive began to stabilize. Their heart rates steadied. Their breathing deepened. There is a verse that has always moved me. The apostle John writes, "We love because He first loved us" (1 John 4:19). Before we could regulate our own spiritual heartbeat — before we could steady our breathing in this chaotic world — God drew us to His chest. His love did not wait for us to be strong enough or stable enough. It came to us in our fragility.
