On February 2, 1949, golfer Ben Hogan and his wife Valerie were driving through thick fog near Van Horn, Texas, when a Greyhound bus slammed into their car head-on. Hogan threw himself across his wife to shield her — a decision that saved both their lives, since the steering column crushed the driver's seat. He suffered a shattered pelvis, a fractured collarbone, a broken ankle, and blood clots that nearly killed him in recovery. Doctors said he might never walk again.

Sixteen months later, Ben Hogan stood on the final tee at Merion Golf Club, legs wrapped in bandages, barely able to finish thirty-six holes in a single day. He won the 1950 U.S. Open. He went on to win six of his nine major championships after the accident that was supposed to end everything.
