The Long Way Back to the Green Jacket

On April 14, 2019, Tiger Woods stood on the eighteenth green at Augusta National and did something no one believed was possible anymore. He won the Masters — his fifteenth major championship, eleven years after his last one.

The years between had been brutal. Four back surgeries, the last a spinal fusion in 2017 that doctors warned might end not just his career but his ability to walk without pain. His world ranking had plummeted to 1,199th. There were mornings he could not bend down to tie his shoes, afternoons when sitting in a chair was agony. The man who had once dominated golf more completely than anyone in history could not swing a club.

But slowly, painfully, Woods rebuilt. Not the same swing — he could never have that again. A new one, designed around a fused spine and a body that had been broken and reassembled. When he slipped on the green jacket that Sunday, he embraced his son Charlie behind the eighteenth green, weeping — mirroring the embrace he had shared with his own father Earl after his first Masters victory twenty-two years earlier.

God does not always restore us to what we were. He restores us to something redesigned around our scars. The prophet Joel promised that the Almighty would "restore the years the locusts have eaten."
