In 1924, Scottish sprinter Eric Liddell arrived at the Paris Olympics as the favorite in the 100 meters. Then he learned the heats were scheduled for a Sunday. Liddell withdrew. The press called him a fool. His own teammates pressured him to reconsider. An entire nation expected him to run.

But Liddell knew something the headlines missed. He was not merely a runner. He was a child of the Living God, and no gold medal could outrank that identity. He switched to the 400 meters — a race he had barely trained for — and won gold in a world-record 47.6 seconds.

Years later, as portrayed in Chariots of Fire, Liddell explained his love for running with words that still echo: "God made me fast, and when I run, I feel His pleasure." He did not run to prove who he was. He ran because he already knew.
