The Marble Everyone Rejected

In 1501, a twenty-six-year-old Michelangelo stood before a massive block of Carrara marble that no one else wanted. The slab had been quarried nearly forty years earlier for the cathedral of Florence, but two sculptors had already tried and abandoned it. Agostino di Duccio roughed out a few cuts, then quit. Antonio Rossellino took one look and walked away. The stone sat exposed to the elements in a cathedral yard for decades, weathered and written off. The wardens of the Opera del Duomo called it "a thing of no value."

Michelangelo saw something no one else could see. Where others saw a ruined, misshapen block, he recognized a figure waiting to emerge. Over the next two years, he carved what many consider the greatest sculpture ever created — the David. Seventeen feet of breathtaking beauty, drawn from stone the world had discarded.

This is how God looks at every one of us. The world may have written its verdict — too damaged, too old, too far gone, too ordinary. Other hands may have tried to shape us and given up. We may have sat neglected so long we have started to believe the label: a thing of no value.

But God is not deterred by what others have abandoned. He sees the masterpiece beneath the weathering. Your identity is not defined by who gave up on you. It is defined by the One who never will.
