The Mending You Never See

Every single day, the DNA inside each of your cells sustains somewhere between ten thousand and one hundred thousand points of damage. But we don't. And in 2015, Swedish scientist Tomas Lindahl shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for helping us understand why. Lindahl discovered that our cells come equipped with astonishing molecular repair crews — enzymes that patrol the double helix, recognize the damage, snip out the broken section, and rebuild it according to the original design. "He restores my soul," David sang in Psalm 23 — not once, not on special occasions, but as the ongoing, faithful work of the Shepherd. The Hebrew word is yeshobeb — He brings back, He returns you to the original design.

You may feel damaged today. By grief, by sin, by years of slow erosion you can't even name. But the same Creator who built ten thousand daily repairs into your DNA has not forgotten how to mend you. He knows the original design. And He is already at work.
