The Name Above the Number

In Victor Hugo's Les Misérables, Jean Valjean spends nineteen years in prison for stealing a loaf of bread. When he is finally released, he is no longer called by his name. He is 24601 — a number, a criminal record, a label the world refuses to let him shed. Every inn turns him away. Every face regards him with suspicion. He has internalized what the world has told him: he is nothing more than a convict.

Then he meets Bishop Myriel, who does something no one else will do. He calls Valjean "monsieur" — sir. He sets a place for him at his own table, with real silverware, as though Valjean were an honored guest. When Valjean steals the bishop's silver and is dragged back by the police, the bishop does not confirm the identity the world has assigned. Instead, he hands Valjean the silver candlesticks and says, "I have bought your soul for God."

In that moment, a number becomes a name again. A convict becomes a man with a future.

This is what the Most High does for every one of us. The world assigns labels — failure, addict, divorced, not enough. But the God who spoke creation into existence calls you chosen, beloved, redeemed. Your identity was never meant to be written by the world's verdict. It was always meant to be spoken by your Creator. The question is not what others have called you, but whose voice you will believe.
