The Number on His Chest, the Name in Heaven
In the 2012 film Les Misérables, Jean Valjean has spent nineteen years in prison, reduced to nothing but a number — 24601. When he is finally released, no innkeeper will take him. No employer will hire him. He is a number on a yellow ticket of leave, not a man. Then Bishop Myriel does the unthinkable. After Valjean steals his silver, the Bishop tells the police he gave it as a gift — and then presses two silver candlesticks into Valjean's hands, whispering, "I have bought your soul for God."
That moment shatters everything Valjean believed about himself. He tears up his parole papers and begins a new life — not as 24601, but as a man redeemed. The old identity, the one the world stamped on him, no longer defines him.
Every one of us carries labels the world has pressed into our skin. Failure. Addict. Divorced. Not enough. We walk around with numbers on our chests, believing that is who we are. But the God who spoke the universe into being looks at you the way the Bishop looked at Valjean — not seeing what you have done, but declaring who you are becoming.
Scripture tells us the Almighty gives us a new name written on a white stone that no one knows except the one who receives it. Your past is not your identity. Your worst chapter is not your title. You belong to the One who renamed you Beloved before you ever drew breath.
