The Number on Your Back

In 2001, Allen Iverson stood before the media after carrying the Philadelphia 76ers to the NBA Finals almost single-handedly. He was five feet eleven inches tall in a league of giants. Every scout who ever measured him said he was too small. Every draft analyst who ever evaluated him said he would never survive the physicality of professional basketball. Iverson heard those voices his entire career — too short, too reckless, too rough around the edges.

But Iverson never played like a man trying to prove the critics wrong. He played like a man who already knew exactly who he was. His crossover dribble became legendary not because he was trying to earn respect, but because he moved with the freedom of someone who had settled the question of identity long before he stepped onto the court.

Here is what Scripture tells us: you are not defined by the measurements others take of you. The Apostle Paul wrote to the Ephesians that we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works that the Almighty prepared in advance for us to walk in. Your identity was settled before you ever stepped onto the court of this life.

Too many of us play every day like we are auditioning — trying to earn a spot on a roster we have already been chosen for. But the Most High does not scout you and find you lacking. He crafted you and called you beloved.

You do not need to prove who you are. You need to live from who you already are.
