The Number That Cannot Be Erased
Every smartphone carries a hidden number called an IMEI — a fifteen-digit code burned into the device's hardware at the moment of manufacture. You can swap the case. You can crack the screen and replace it. You can delete every app, wipe every photo, and restore the phone to factory settings. But that IMEI remains. It was written into the device before it ever left the assembly line, and no amount of damage, change, or resetting can erase it.
We live in a world that constantly tries to rewrite our identity. Career losses strip away our sense of purpose. Relationships end, and we wonder if we are still lovable. Age changes the face in the mirror, and we barely recognize ourselves. We swap out versions of who we think we are the way we swap phone cases — trying on new looks, new roles, new personas — hoping something finally feels right.
But Scripture says your deepest identity was written before you ever drew breath. "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you," God told Jeremiah (1:5). Like that IMEI burned into the hardware, your identity as God's beloved child is not an app you downloaded or a setting you can accidentally delete. It was placed there by your Maker.
The world can scratch the screen. Life can crack the casing. But who you are in Christ? That number cannot be erased.
