The Number That Could Not Hold Him
In the 1998 film Les Misérables, there is a moment that cuts to the bone of what it means to be renamed by grace. Jean Valjean, played by Liam Neeson, has spent nineteen years in prison, known only as prisoner 24601. That number defined him — it was stamped on his papers, branded into his identity. When he is finally released, the world still sees 24601: a convict, a thief, someone beyond redemption.
Then a bishop does the unthinkable. When Valjean steals his silver and is dragged back by the police, the bishop says the silver was a gift — and adds the candlesticks too. In that single act of scandalous mercy, the bishop refuses to let a prison number have the final word over a man's soul. Valjean breaks his parole papers and walks into a new life, a new name, a new identity.
This is what the Almighty does for every one of us. The world assigns us numbers — our failures, our diagnoses, our worst moments. But God looks at us and says what He said through the prophet Isaiah: "I have called you by name; you are Mine." The old labels lose their grip the moment grace speaks a truer word over us.
You are not your worst chapter. You are not the number the world gave you. You are named and claimed by the Living God, and no record on earth can overwrite that.
