The Silver That Bought a Soul
In Les Misérables, Jean Valjean has spent nineteen years in prison, and the world has made sure he never forgets it. He is Prisoner 24601 — a number, not a name. When he is finally released, no inn will take him. No employer will hire him. His yellow parole papers brand him before he can speak a word.
Then Bishop Myriel takes him in. Valjean, broken and bitter, repays the kindness by stealing the Bishop's silver in the night. When the police drag him back, the Bishop does the unthinkable. He tells the officers he gave the silver to Valjean — then presses the silver candlesticks into his hands and whispers, "With this silver, I have bought your soul for God."
In that moment, a number becomes a name again. A thief becomes a man entrusted with something sacred. Valjean does not earn a new identity — he receives one, given freely by someone who sees past the parole papers to the person underneath.
This is what the Almighty does. He looks past every label the world has stamped on you — failure, addict, divorced, unworthy — and speaks what He declared over you before you drew your first breath: "You are Mine."
You are not your worst moment. You are not your darkest chapter. You are claimed, named, and called by the God who buys souls not with silver, but with the blood of His own Son.
