The Song Beneath the Noise

Open the Shazam app in a crowded restaurant — silverware clanking, a dozen conversations colliding, laughter erupting from the bar — and hold your phone toward the ceiling speaker. Within seconds, the app names the exact song playing. It works because Shazam doesn't listen to the noise. It listens through it. Every recorded song carries a unique acoustic fingerprint, a pattern of frequencies so distinct that no amount of surrounding chaos can disguise it. The melody is always there, always identifiable, no matter what tries to drown it out.

I think about this when people tell me they've lost themselves. The noise of life gets so loud — the demands of a career, the opinions of social media, the accumulated weight of other people's expectations — that they can no longer hear who they actually are. They feel unrecognizable, even to themselves.

But Scripture says God embedded something in you that no noise can erase. "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you," the Lord told Jeremiah. The Almighty didn't wait for you to become something. He already knew the song He composed you to be. Psalm 139 says you are fearfully and wonderfully made — not assembled from circumstances, not defined by your failures, not reducible to your résumé.

The noise is real. But it is not you. Beneath every competing voice, your true identity remains — the one written by your Creator before you drew your first breath. And He can still pick it out in a crowded room.
