The Surgeon Who Rebuilds What Was Broken

In orthopedic surgery, there is a remarkable procedure called autologous chondrocyte implantation. A surgeon harvests a small sample of healthy cartilage cells from a patient's own knee, sends those cells to a laboratory where they are cultivated and multiplied over several weeks, and then reimplants them into the damaged joint. What was worn down, what grinding bone-on-bone pain had made nearly useless, begins to regenerate. The body, given the right conditions, rebuilds itself from its own living material.

Dr. Lars Peterson of the University of Gothenburg pioneered this technique in 1987, and it changed how medicine thinks about damaged joints. The old assumption was simple: once cartilage is gone, it is gone. Peterson proved otherwise. The capacity for restoration was already inside the patient. It just needed to be drawn out, nurtured, and placed back where it belonged.

This is what the God of all restoration does with a human soul. He does not replace you with someone else. He draws out what He originally placed within you — the image of God, the capacity for love, the hunger for holiness — cultivates it by His Spirit, and sets it back where it belongs. The prophet Joel promised it: "I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten."
