The Warmth That Heals

In 1978, a hospital in Bogotá, Colombia faced a crisis. The Instituto Materno Infantil had too many premature babies and not enough incubators. Dr. Edgar Rey Sanabria tried something radical — he asked mothers to hold their tiny infants against their bare chests, skin to skin, around the clock.

What happened astonished the medical world. These fragile babies, some weighing barely two pounds, began to stabilize. Their heart rates steadied. Their breathing regulated. Their temperatures normalized. Researchers later discovered something remarkable: a mother's chest will actually adjust its own temperature — warming up or cooling down — to bring her baby's body to exactly the right degree. Her body becomes a living thermostat, calibrated entirely to her child's need.

They called it kangaroo care, and it has since saved countless lives in neonatal units worldwide.
