The Weight of Two Silver Candlesticks
In the film Les Misérables, there is a scene that stops audiences in their tracks. Jean Valjean, a hardened ex-convict released after nineteen years in prison, is taken in by Bishop Myriel — given a warm meal, a clean bed, and the first kindness he has known in decades. Valjean repays this generosity by stealing the Bishop's silver in the dead of night.
When the police drag Valjean back the next morning with the stolen goods in hand, the Bishop does something no one expects. He tells the officers the silver was a gift — then presses two silver candlesticks into Valjean's trembling hands and declares that he has bought his soul for God.
That single act of undeserved love changes everything. Valjean spends the rest of his life becoming a man of compassion and mercy — not because he earned the right, but because someone loved him before he deserved it.
This is exactly how the Almighty loves us. Romans 5:8 says, "While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." God does not wait for us to clean ourselves up. He meets us at our worst and offers us something we could never purchase on our own — grace that transforms from the inside out.
The love that changes people is never love that waits until they are worthy. It is love that makes them so.
