Thirty Thousand Dots

When Apple introduced Face ID in 2017 with the iPhone X, they built a tiny projector called the TrueDepth camera that floods your face with thirty thousand invisible infrared dots. In milliseconds, it maps the precise depth and contour of every feature — the curve of your cheekbone, the bridge of your nose, the distance between your eyes. No two maps are alike. Not even identical twins can fool it.

Thirty thousand points of data, just to say: this is you. No one else.

The psalmist didn't have infrared technology, but he understood the same truth. "I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made," David wrote (Psalm 139:14). The God who knit us together in our mothers' wombs mapped every detail of who we are — not with dots of light, but with purpose and intention.

Here is where the analogy deepens. Face ID doesn't care whether you just woke up, whether you're wearing glasses, whether you've aged ten years. It sees past the surface to the structure beneath. It recognizes you even when you barely recognize yourself in the mirror.

God's knowledge of your identity works the same way. On the days when you feel invisible, forgettable, interchangeable with anyone else — the Creator who designed you speaks through the prophet: "I have called you by name; you are Mine" (Isaiah 43:1).

No algorithm assigned your worth. No system generated your purpose. You were known by a Maker who used far more than thirty thousand points of care.
