Walking Again at Merion
On February 2, 1949, Ben Hogan's car collided head-on with a Greyhound bus on a foggy Texas highway. He threw himself across his wife to shield her from the impact — a reflex that saved his life when the steering column pierced the driver's seat where he had been sitting. The crash shattered his pelvis, fractured his collarbone and ankle, and left him with near-fatal blood clots. Doctors told him he might never walk again.
Sixteen months later, Hogan stood on the final green at Merion Golf Club, legs wrapped in bandages beneath his trousers, and forced a playoff for the 1950 U.S. Open. The next day, he won it. On legs doctors said would never carry him down a fairway, he captured six major championships between 1950 and 1953.
The sports world calls it the greatest comeback in golf history. But every pastor knows a greater story. The God who spoke to Ezekiel in a valley of dry bones is the same God who speaks over every shattered life: "I will put My Spirit in you, and you shall live" (Ezekiel 37:14).
Restoration in God's hands never means simply returning to what was. Hogan after the wreck became a better golfer than Hogan before it. And the people the Almighty restores don't merely recover — they are made new. Whatever has been broken in your life, He is not finished with you. He is not merely mending. He is remaking.
