What Five Centuries of Soot Had Hidden
In 1980, restorers began the painstaking work of cleaning Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling. For nearly five hundred years, candle soot, incense residue, and layers of animal glue from earlier repair attempts had darkened the frescoes until the world believed Michelangelo painted in muted, somber tones. Art historians built entire theories around his supposed preference for shadow and restraint.
Then the restorers began to clean.
What emerged over fourteen years of careful work stunned the art world. Beneath the grime were colors of breathtaking vibrancy — luminous pinks, electric greens, brilliant oranges, and skies of piercing blue. The Michelangelo everyone thought they knew was not the real Michelangelo at all. The masterpiece had been there the whole time, buried under what the years had deposited.
This is what God does with a human soul. Sin, shame, grief, and the accumulated weight of hard years can leave us believing that the diminished version of ourselves is the real one. We forget — or never knew — what the Master Artist originally intended. But the God who created us does not forget. He sees beneath every layer of soot. And His restoration does not destroy what was there; it reveals what was always there.
"If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come" (2 Corinthians 5:17). The Almighty is not making you into someone else. He is uncovering who you were meant to be all along.
