What the Shark Couldn't Reach

On October 31, 2003, thirteen-year-old Bethany Hamilton was lying on her surfboard off the coast of Kauai, Hawaii, when a fourteen-foot tiger shark seized her left arm just below the shoulder. In an instant, she lost over sixty percent of her blood — and the world immediately tried to hand her a new identity. She became "the girl who lost her arm." Every headline, every introduction, every sympathetic glance reduced her to a single terrible morning.

But Bethany refused the label. Twenty-six days after the attack, she was back in the water. She went on to win a national surfing title in 2005 and has competed professionally for over two decades since. When asked how she found the courage to return, she didn't talk about grit or mental toughness. She said simply, "My identity is in Christ, not in what I can or cannot do."

The world is constantly trying to name us by our worst moments, our deepest losses, our most visible wounds. You are the divorce. You are the diagnosis. You are the failure. But the God who knit you together in your mother's womb has already spoken your name. "I have called you by name," the Lord declares through Isaiah. "You are Mine" (Isaiah 43:1).

No shark — no loss, no trauma, no circumstance — can reach the place where the Almighty has written His claim on your life. Your identity was settled before the wave ever came.
