When Grace Outweighs the Evidence
In Les Misérables, Jean Valjean is caught red-handed. After nineteen years in prison, the desperate ex-convict steals silver from the one man who showed him kindness — Bishop Myriel, who had given him a warm meal and a bed for the night. When the police drag Valjean back to the bishop's door, every piece of evidence condemns him. The stolen silver is in his bag. The case is closed.
But the bishop does the unthinkable. He tells the officers he gave Valjean the silver as a gift — then reaches for two silver candlesticks and presses them into Valjean's trembling hands. "Do not forget," the bishop whispers, "you no longer belong to evil. With this silver, I have bought your soul for God."
That single act of scandalous grace shatters everything Valjean believed about himself. He was a convict. A number. A man defined by the worst thing he had ever done. But the bishop's mercy spoke a different word over his life — and it changed him forever.
This is the heart of what the Almighty does for every one of us. We come with the evidence against us, and God says, "I know what you've done. But that is not who you are." The Lord does not restore us because we deserve it. He restores us because that is simply who He is — a God whose mercy is always heavier than our shame.
You are not the worst chapter of your story. In Christ, the next chapter has already begun.
