When Immigration and Welcome Meets Real Life
In our increasingly diverse world, the topic of immigration and welcome touches hearts and minds like never before, echoing the struggles faced by countless biblical figures. Picture, if you will, the dusty roads of ancient Palestine, where Jesus met the Samaritan woman at the well—an outcast to her own people, yet embraced by Him as a sister. As they conversed, He shattered social barriers, extending agape love (selfless love) to someone society deemed unworthy.
Now fast forward to a recent story in our community. Imagine a young family from Syria, driven from their home by war, arriving at our doorstep with nothing but the clothes on their backs and a profound sense of fear. As they stepped off the bus, their wide eyes scanned the unfamiliar landscape, searching for a glimmer of hope. It would have been easy for us to turn away, to let our own uncertainties guide our actions. But instead, inspired by Philippians 2:5-8, we chose a different path. We reminded ourselves to adopt the same mindset as Christ, who humbled Himself, serving not only the righteous but the marginalized as well.
Through our church, we organized a welcome dinner. The aroma of spices filled the air as we shared dishes from their homeland, transforming a mundane church hall into a sanctuary of warmth. Laughter mingled with tears, and suddenly, the walls of division faded. People who once felt like mere visitors were embraced as beloved members of our community. This is what it means to live out our faith actively, to bring forth justice and love in tangible ways.
In these moments, we see how God’s word breathes life into our actions, reminding us that our call to welcome the stranger is not just a historical lesson—it's a divine invitation to transform our world into one of compassion and hope.
