When Love Carries What It Cannot Fix
In The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Frodo Baggins collapses on the slopes of Mount Doom. The Ring has drained every ounce of his strength. He cannot walk. He cannot crawl. The mission that the fate of the world depends on has ground to a halt on a hillside of volcanic ash.
And then Samwise Gamgee kneels beside his friend and says the words that have moved audiences to tears since 2003: "I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you." Sam hoists Frodo onto his back and staggers up the mountain, step by agonizing step, toward the fires above.
What makes this moment so powerful is what Sam does not do. He does not lecture Frodo about trying harder. He does not minimize the weight of what Frodo bears. He simply puts his friend's burden on his own back and climbs.
This is the love the Apostle Paul described when he wrote, "Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ." Real love does not wait for people to get stronger before showing up. It meets them on the ash-covered slopes of their worst days and says, "Lean on me."
There is someone in your life right now who has collapsed under a weight they were never meant to carry alone. You may not be able to remove their burden. But you can carry them.
