When Love Pays the Debt You Cannot
In the 2012 film Les Misérables, there is a moment that still brings audiences to tears. Jean Valjean, a hardened ex-convict, is caught stealing silver from the Bishop of Digne — the one man who had shown him kindness. When the police drag Valjean back to the bishop's door, expecting condemnation, the bishop does something astonishing. He tells the officers that the silver was a gift. Then he hands Valjean the silver candlesticks as well, whispering, "I have bought your soul for God."
That single act of radical, undeserved love demolishes every wall Valjean has built around his heart. He falls to his knees, broken not by punishment but by grace. The bishop absorbs the cost of the theft himself — and in doing so, sets a prisoner free in ways no pardon ever could.
This is the shape of divine love. The Apostle Paul writes, "While we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8). We were caught red-handed, guilty beyond dispute. Yet instead of condemnation, God spoke on our behalf and paid what we could never repay.
Love — real love, the kind that flows from the heart of the Almighty — does not wait for us to deserve it. It meets us in our worst moment, covers our shame, and says, "Now go, and become who I already see you to be."
